Audio/Live Streaming FAQs

  • How does Live Streaming work?

Live streaming is a bit like watching TV but the main difference is that while TV streams a prerecorded series of videos;  a live streaming video is sent over the internet in real time. This eliminates the need for it to be recorded ahead of time and stored. It also gives many opportunities to reach many multiple users at once.

There are a lot of steps that take place on a technical level to enable live streaming to happen effectively. These include: compression, encoding, segmentation, content delivery network (CDN) distribution, CDN caching, decoding and video playback.

  • What equipment do I need?

There is some essential equipment that is needed for live streaming to be successful; a camera, microphone, lighting and a stable internet connection. We would always recommend at least 1Mb as a minimum at all times with a wide connection.

The market is flooded with different cameras for a whole array of budgets and we can help you decide which will fulfil your requirements.

For videos and live streaming to be fully effective and engaging, the audio needs to be good quality. A camera may provide a great visual but the integrated audio may not be the best performer for the task in hand, therefore a separate microphone has the ability to enhance the live stream for the multiple users.

A well lit scene can help your live stream look more professional. If your viewers struggle to see what is happening due to poor lighting and if the focal point of the video is in shadows then this can lead to disengagement.

A key piece of equipment is hte Audio Video Interface because it mixes the video feed from the camera and the main audio feed. These come with a wide range of features to suit a variety of budgets.

The Audio Cable Infrastructure is in most cases suitable but may need to be reviewed.

The Video Cable Infrastructure will in most cases need to be installed afresh to meet the current demands of the camera. The higher the quality of the camera, the greater the demand on your existing cable infrastructure so it is worth bearing in mind when selecting your equipment.

  • Are there different ways of live streaming?

In short, yes. The most common way is using existing platforms such as YouTube and Facebook which are currently free. You can opt for a paid for service. The final way is having a bespoke platform built for you that can be accessed from your own website.

  • Do I need to get a new sound system to make it work?

Not necessarily, but the current sound system would need to be able to achieve a certain level of sound quality.

  • Do I need a technician to be able to use it?

In some cases the system can be operated with minimal skill. However, if you want to get the most from your system, having a technical operator to live edit can be beneficial

  • How much can a live streaming system cost?

Depending on existing audio cable infrastructure £10,000 would be a good estimate for a basic install and would include a camera, audio video interface and engineering. If a greater amount of work is needed for the audio cable infrastructure or higher quality equipment selected then the price can range upwards as high as you would like.
